November 2017: Doris Staine Breaks Barriers
Fourteen-year-old Doris Staine is like every typical high schooler… “I don’t like math problems, I complain of too much homework, I giggle with friends, and I probably spend too much time on my phone.”
But for this first form student at Nazarene High School, the road to secondary education has been anything but typical or smooth. Doris was born with the birth defect Spina Bifida, which occurs when the bones of the spine do not properly form around the spinal cord. This condition is not uncommon; affecting approximately 1 in 1000 births. As a result of the Spina Bifida, Doris is unable to walk and has limited sensation in her legs. To get around, she uses a wheelchair.
August 2017: Tenesha Card Creates Royalty
Ms. Tenesha Card is a mother and a daughter, but one of her proudest titles is now “entrepreneur” as the proud owner of Royalty Massage located at #3797 University Heights in Belize City. Through support and training opportunities offered by the Ministry of Human Development, Social Transformation and Poverty Alleviation, Ms. Card became certified in Swedish Massage & Facial Spa Therapy and started her own business.
Prior to training, Ms. Card periodically held part-time jobs with her primary role being a housewife and mother. Those roles were fulfilling and she admits, “I never envisioned owning much in life and was trapped in a form of dependency relying on family and friends.”
